fourforyouosgood asked: Hello! I want a small mammal that is affectionate/plays outside of a cage and my mom won't be allergic to (she has allergies to gerbils, possibly ferrets, and rats regardless of their coat). Would a chinchilla fit that description? And if not, do you know of something that could other than a hedgehog (one of the many mammals that are practically illegal in my state)? Thank you!
A chinchilla would only meet half of these requirements. They are in fact great pets for those who suffer from pet-related allergies. But most chinchillas are not affectionate animals in that most of them hate to be held and cuddled. That’s not to say they don’t bond with their people, but they are not lap pets. They are still fun little pets though, and your chance of finding a more social chinchilla will increase if you buy a young one from a reputable breeder!
If you are set on having a cuddly, affectionate pet, you may want to do research on sugar gliders! I am not sure of the legality where you are if hedgies are illegal in your state. I don’t know much about them except that they are hypoallergenic and should be kept in pairs. But if you want a pet that will climb on you and sit in your pocket, this would be a better choice than a chinchilla.
